Moving to gTLD.club

We publish a lot of information about new gTLDs every day, sometimes too much and in far too many different places. I am often asked where to go to stay informed about all info related to new gTLDs:
  • New gTLD articles,
  • Important ICANN announcements related to new generic Top-Level Domains;
  • New gTLD conferences and other meetings;
  • Sunrise Periods and other Trademark Clearinghouse's announcements and events;
  • Information related to ".wine" and ".vin" domain names;
  • Major players' moves;
  • Upcoming new gTLD projects;
  • Information about Round 2 of the ICANN new gTLD program;
  • ...
To give a final answer to that question, I will be focusing on gTLD.club and its Newsletter. Readers are welcome to click below and subscribe to our daily Newsletter on gTLD.club.

What about the daily Newsletter from NEWSgTLDs.com?
As a true fan of new generic Top-Level Domains, I feel more and more uncomfortable to promote "new gTLDs" behind an old ".com" domain name ;-) so actual readers of this newsletter will soon be offered to migrate to the new one from gTLD.club

New gTLDs - It's not if, it's when

A number of domain owners have come to the misconception that I don’t believe in the new gTLDs. This couldn’t be further from the truth! What I’m wrestling with is the when not the ifthe new gTLDs take-off. In the last 12 months there has been a lot of growth off a small base with the new gTLDs. According to ntldstats the numbers have grown from around 3.6m to just over 10m so far this year. This is around 270% growth this year (off a small number compared to the incumbents) and pretty good when you consider it wasn’t long ago when there were none.

Although ICANN has finally revealed that it has spent five times the amount it had previously claimed on lobbying the US government, thanks to persistent pressure from the internet community, the fact remains that this disclosure has been carefully structured to present the minimal level of real transparency it feels it can get away with.

New gTLDs: just a beginning?

New gTLD experts to give their opinion during a real estate industry conference on whether new gTLDs are a passing fad or not.

According to Jean Guillon:
I find it interesting that Verisign, who was previoulsy exposed in an article for paying a third party to criticize new gTLDs, is more positieve about the future of new gTLDs.

Extract from the article:
"The question of a “passing fad” was raised during a most interesting session at the 2015 NAR Conference & Expo entitled “The New Internet: What You Need To Know,” moderated by NAR VP Ken Burlington. The three expert panelists agreed that this new internet was not a passing fad".

Why would you use location based domain names?

There are many reasons why someone should use a location based domain name. This is an example of use from a small business in Aurstralia.

According to Jean Guillon:
Country code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs such as ".fr" for France or "us" for the United States) will remain for sure. I personnaly find that they go straight to the point when it comes to informing about the country location of a company. On the other hand, location based domain names such as ".paris" or ".london" offer more precision.

Extract from the article:
"Fung, who is the company’s state manager, says the kungfu.sydney domain name has given him an edge over his competitors because the location of his businesses is built into the domain name itself".

String contention for the .HOTEL new gTLD: we have a winner

Another ICANN auction ends for this string contention for HOTELS/.HOTEIS new gTLDs.
According to Jean Guillon:
String contentions are being resolved little by little but plural new gTLDs, such as ".HOTELS", ".CARS", ".PHOTOS"... remain a problem for end users. They generate confusion when it comes to buying a domain name and they increase the possibility for squatters to register "that other domain name" Registrants (end users) forgot to secure when they registered the singular version of their domain name.

Extract from the article:
"Two applicants participated in the auction for .HOTELS/.HOTEIS. Booking.com B.V., applicant for .HOTELS, prevailed with a winning price of $2,200,000".

10 million new domain names registered

A milestone is reached with more than 10 million new domain names registered.

According to Jean Guillon:
One would think it is a lot. I consider this being a lot of domain names but taking a look at previous projections from new gTLD applicants, this is very few. New gTLDs will require more time to develop.

Extract from the article:
"In addition to these top 5 registries, there are also 8 extensions that have over 100,000 domain names registered: .Club, .Science, .Party, .Link, .Click, .Ren, .Website, and .Realtor. .Online and .Date have just a bit fewer than 100,000 registered domain names".

6 reasons why you should use domain extensions of regions and nationalities

This is an article from Christopher Hofman Laursen on regional gTLDs and more.

According to Jean Guillon:
End users are used to registering country code Top-Level Domains (also called ccTLDs) but regional domain name extensions such as ".lat", ".bzh", ".africa" ... offer more opportunities.

Two new Sunrise Periods announced by the Trademark Clearinghouse

The .BET and .LASALLE Sunrise Periods were just announced..

According to Jean Guillon:
The .LASALLE new gTLD
It seems to be a Trademark application: "Only Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated and its Affiliates(and qualifying Trademark Licensees as defined in, and in accordance with Specification 13 of the Registry Agreement (“Specification 13”) where applicable) (the “Registrant”) are eligible to register a Domain Name under the .LASALLE TLD. If the Registrant ceases to be eligible at any time in the future, the Registry may cancel or suspend the license to use the Domain Name immediately".

The .BET new gTLD
At the moment I am writing this, the Registry 's website seems to be down but the application says: "The purpose of the .BET TLD is to create an easily identifiable Internet namespace where the activities carried on are clearly understood and consumers visiting them would know exactly what they were getting and from whom. This creates value for registrants in that they can assume that visitors have arrived at their websites willingly and in full knowledge, so registrants have the opportunity to increase the professionalism and quality of their offerings, improving the quantity and quality of their marketplace offerings. Additionally, visionary entrepreneurs can work with allied and competitive registrants to create new online applications to create superior value for the consumers who buy a .BET domain name".

WHEN:
  • The .BET new gTLD: Tuesday, 5 January, 2016 - 16:00;
  • The .LASALLE new gTLD: Monday, 14 December, 2015.

Crazy: 10,000 ".club" domain names containing 5 numbers sold in 1 single day

The .CLUB Registry is creating fashions, pushing ".com" domainers to joining the ".club".

According to Jean Guillon:
I do not count anymore but the ".club" Registry creates more and more initiative developing its Registry. The latest one seems to be successful attracting domain name investors to register 5 number ".club" domain names.

"Domains such as 19998.club, 21112.club, 21113.club, 71255.club and 99769.club were registered".

Save the .EARTH (new gTLDs)

Another Green friendly new gTLD is launching this week, it is the .EARTH new gTLD.

According to Jean Guillon:
I don't really know what to say about the .EARTH new gTLD but here is what the applicatin details say: "The concept of creating the “.earth” TLD is much larger than environmental relationships, or philanthropic ideals; it’s all about connecting and establishing cooperative relationships between like-minded individuals who wish to show their support for making the planet a better place".

Extract from the article:
"Thursday marks the launch of .Earth, a domain name targeted to “green” sites. It will compete squarely with .Green, but can also be considered a generic".
