A question asked to Colin Campbell

To Colin Campbell:
"Colin Campbell, CEO of .club, asked if I would post this guest blog and after reading it I immediately agreed. Two great things about Colin is his insightfulness about the domain industry but also his willingness to admit it when he gets things wrong. This combination makes him one of the people in the domain industry that I would highly recommend that you pay attention to".

Spotlight on Manuals.club

Manuals.club
According to Jason Thompson
"As you might of guessed it, the website is dedicated to all sorts of manuals. You can browse the massive amount of manuals archived on this site or you can search for specific manuals. I understand the importance of being able to find a manual. I’ve had to dabble with searching frantically for car manuals before and it certainly isn’t an easy process".

Do Arabic TLDs influence content?

IDNs
Do businesses really need Arabic Top Level Domains?
"Zeidan said Arabic TLDs benefit Arabic content when it comes to protecting Arabic trademarks, as trademarks are usually protected in the language in which it is registered. They also help users find the trademark’s original name in Arabic, as well as facilitate SEO ranking where the website’s address matches its Arabic content".

Did Nielsen ask Registrants if they knwo about negative TLDs?

From Jean (in French):
"Si les questions posées par Nielsen ne sont pas connues (et c'est bien dommage), j'aurai aimé qu'il soit demandé au prestigieux organisme de sondage de s'adresser aux marques car si l'on retient que 54% des titulaires d'un NDD sont au fait du cybersquattage (traduction française), je doute fort que les marques soient au courant de l'existence nouvelle des extension Internet du type .SUCKS et de ce qu'il pourrait bien en résulter dans un avenir proche"

gTLD Strategies for Smaller Businesses

From Mark Skoultchi:

"In addition, small businesses can consider using new gTLDs (and some of the existing ccTLDs) that make sense for their brands. Extensions with good prospects for small businesses include the premium geographic players, like .nyc and .london, as well as the most elegantly phrased, industry-specific gTLDs, such as .health (versus .healthcare) and .law (versus .lawfirm or .lawyer or .attorney)".

The .TOP new gTLD : 75,000 domains registered in 2 days?

Second place for .TOP new TLD:
The .TOP Registry seems to be very efficient at putting names on the market. Apparently, there seem to be a developing fashion which consists in registering numbered domain names.

According to TheDomains:
"Yesterday according to RegistrarStats.com .Top picked up over 42,000 registrations and as you can see from the chart (also courtesy of RegistrarStats.com) had just around 220,000 registrations at the end of August".

Who will be first: .APPLE or .GOOGLE ?

New .GOOGLE domains?
The .GOOGLE new gTLD was delegated but it does nos seem that these new domain names are part of recent developments.
According to a recent announcement:
"In an effort to further increase security, in the coming weeks we’ll be changing the main Google Calendar URL from "www.google.com/calendar' to 'calendar.google.com"

Since Google often does announcements of this kind, it would have been appropriate to consider changing to a ".google" domain name instead of another sub-domain.

Join the Apple Club
Apple seems to have started to redirect new domain names to its front page and apple.club is a good example of this but having a look at domains ending in ".apple, the google search engines does not yet show any.

The .NEWS domain names start to be adopted

.NEWS beats competitors

The .NEWS new gTLD has competitors and the biggest one is not .PRESS, it is .BLOG but .NEWS has many advantages:
  1. it is multilingual;
  2. it is cheap: $10 at the moment at some Registrars;
  3. we do not know how much a ".blog" will cost since it has not launched yet;
  4. ".press" is more for the press specifically rather than news in general.
  5. registration volumes don't lie:
  6. there are 24,936 ".news" domain names registered;
  7. there are 7,239 ".press" doamins registered.

New Domains let you do more

"You are no longer limited to traditional generic domains when creating a personal website. And that’s good news: yourname.com may not be available, especially if you have a common name. 5 Ways Domain Names Foster Community and Brand Equity

Make it memorable:
"You can use a memorable domain to point to your social community. For instance, you might use a domain name like yourname.club to redirect users to your Facebook page. An example is www.treatadog.club, which uses a customized .CLUB domain name to help build its social community around branded — and shareable — memes and other content with which users can engage"

New gTLDs statistics (by Jean Guillon)

Weekly report
Two reports:
Each week, a report to which I participate is published on NDD.buzz: it deals with registration volumes of domain names using an extension which has a French meaning.
For example: you also use the words "club", "boutique", "science", "news"and many others in French. The report shows registration variations from a week to the other.
The second report is the same but it focusses on city TLDs only.

The (new) Domains for Today

Brand Domains of the Future:
"The current extensions are also an opportunity for companies to get a relevant “category killer” domain. In the early .com days, only the fast movers were able to capitalize on them. While Barnes & Noble owns book.com, Amazon could snatch up book.club or book.shop, for example."

What use for .SFR new domain names?

ICANN is on its way to being surpassed? (read conclusion)

According to the Instituto de Geografia of the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro:
"The present context of unilateral, corporate IG (Internet Governance) that is maintained by ICANN is on its way to being surpassed. The UN-promoted, global Internet Governance Forum (IGF) held in Rio de Janeiro in 2007 demonstrated that many UN member-countries seek multilateral, democratic IG based on global agreement".

Stop selling names, but don’t give them away either

A "club is a club": sports clubs, fan clubs, night clubs to use a domain name ending in ".club".
According to Mickaël Vigreux:"The goal for most people I know outside of Afnic is to have an email address, a website, a blog, a Facebook page, a showcase for their company. I don’t remember hearing, "hey, I need a domain name." What I’ve heard instead is "So you work in domain names? What’s does that mean?".
